About us:If you hear the word cyclone you may not be quite sure what it is. Some people will think it's the kind of tornado that carried Dorothy from Kansas to the Land of Oz in the Frank Baum book. Others may say it is a type of storm. None of these explanations really tells us what are cyclones. However cyclones are basically organized storm systems that center on an area of low pressure. Here are some important things to know that will help you understand what a cyclone is. First off air has weight and this weight is called air pressure. When you hear the weather man or lady talk about high or low pressure systems they are talking about areas of high or low air pressure in the Earth's atmosphere. This is what creates what we call weather. Essentially energy from the sun heats up the ground and bodies of water. This heat is transferred to the air just above it in a process called convection. When convection heats air it makes it rise through the atmosphere forcing colder air to sink down. This cycle of rising and sinking air creates low and high areas of pressure.
